Respect in Sport

Parents and Coaches/Team Officials are required to complete the Respect in Sport program. Certification in the Respect in Sport program is valid for up to four seasons.

The Respect in Sport Program is an online certification program designed to protect our youth while providing a safe and fun environment for all of our participants. It is Canada’s leading online bullying, abuse, harassment, and negligence prevention program for parents, coaches, and community leaders. It is offered in two different streams:

Respect in Sport Parent

The Respect in Sport Parent Program helps define a standard of behaviour for all parents and create a more rewarding, safe and respectful environment for everyone involved. Parents want to do a great job supporting their kids. Respect in Sport provides parents with the tools to do just that.

Course Fee: $12.00

Respect in Sport (RIS) Certification is a requirement of Banff Minor Hockey and Hockey Alberta in order to register your child in hockey.

Respect in Sport Activity Leader/Coach/Officials

The Respect in Sport Activity Leader/Coach Program educates coaches and activity leaders to recognize, understand and respond to issues of bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination. It may be the single most important training leaders receive to assist in creating a safe, healthy and respectful environment for all participants.

Course Fee: $30.00

IMPORTANT

When beginning the course it is important to open "Child Management" and enter all children you are registering in hockey. All children must be listed here in order to associate your certification with your child's Hockey Canada record. To aide with connecting your certification to your child's record, children's names should be entered using the same spelling as when they were registered with Hockey Canada.

Please be sure you choose the correct association your child will be registered in to ensure your certificate is linked to your child's profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you reimburse the course fee?

No, BMH does not cover the cost of the fee for parent RIS, which amounts to $3 a year based on a 4 year certification. We do reimburse coaches upon successful completion of RIS activity leaders.

Why do I have to re-certify every 4 years?

The Respect In Sport program was never intended to be a one time certification.  In 2017, all new course content was released with expanded topics including cyber bullying, concussion awareness and long term athlete development, further enhancing the tools available for parents.

If I have the Respect in Sport for activity leaders do I also need the RIS parent certification?

Yes - the programs cover different material. One parent must have the RIS parent certification regardless of RIS activity leader status.

How is Respect in Sport implemented?

The Respect in Sport Parent Program is presented as an online curriculum and includes audio/visual presentations.

What equipment is required to complete the program?

All that is required to complete the Respect in Sport curriculum is a computer, smart phone, ipad or tablet and an Internet connection. Optional equipment includes a printer to print out your certificate of completion.

How long is the course?

It's approximately 1 hour.

Do I have to do it all at once?

No. You can do it at your leisure, come and go as required. The program remembers where you left off and brings you back to that point when you next sign-in. You can even do it from different computers.

Do I have to take the course every year?

No, but you must re-certify after 4 years.
